Drive-By Shooting was made as a proof of concept, really. Something to show off “the device,” which is a DSLR mounted in the backseat of the car with a wired trigger running to the steering wheel. Something I can shoot with while driving along the highway, keeping more or less the same viewpoint throughout. All these test shots were taken doing standard farm errands and expecting nothing: just staying aware of my surroundings while driving past.
Thinking about it now, it’s somewhat akin to the Lomographic idea of “shooting from the hip,” or at least the lack of any real need to look through the viewfinder. Except in this instance I don’t even need to point and shoot. I just rattle off a few frames as I drive by and, no matter what, it’s always a photograph.
The system might be the result of obsessing over Google Street View, mixed with the realization that after 30+ years of being a passenger princess, most of my road trips are now solo missions. I still wanted to photograph the way I did from the passenger seat: continuously, instinctively, and without stopping the car every five minutes. “The device” was the solution and I still use some version of this setup on every trip.
